Background

As an undergraduate I studied biology at the University of York, UK. In October 2001 I began my PhD studies at the National Institute for Medical Research, London, UK in the laboratory of Justin Molloy (Division of Physical Biochemistry). This work focussed on single molecules mechanical studies of molecular motors. Here I learnt a variety of biophysical techniques including the use and construction of an optical tweezer force transducer. I was awarded my PhD from Imperial College School of Medicine in March 2005.

Upon submission of my thesis I did a year’s post doctoral work with Justin Molloy funded by the IRC in Bionanotechnology. During this time I started to develop single molecule methods for studying DNA helicases.

In 2005 I started a career development fellowship in Julian Sales group at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK. Here I studied DNA repair processes using a combination of genetic, molecular biology, cell culture and confocal microscopy techniques including live cell imaging and FRET microscopy.

In 2009 I moved back to London to Claudia Veigel’s group before coming here to Munich.
